Electronic Waste (WEEE Waste)
Some waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is classified as hazardous waste. This includes WEEE that contains hazardous components or substances such as:
• Polychlorinated biphenyls, for example in capacitors.
• Ozone-depleting substances for example in fridges and freezers.
The WEEE Regulations have been placed in two categories:
1 – Historical
Historical WEEE is classed as EEE that was placed on the UK market prior to August 15 2005.
2 – New
New WEEE relates to EEE that has been placed on the market since August 15 2005. It is now standard practice that New WEEE contains a crossed out wheelie bin symbol.
WEEE materials have been broken down into 5 waste streams:
1 – Large Domestic Appliances (LDA) including washing machines, cookers, tumble dryers, dishwashers etc.
2 – Cooling appliances – Such as fridges and freezers
3 – CRTs (cathode ray tubes) including televisions and computer monitors
4 – Fluorescent tubes and light bulbs
5 – SDA (small domestic appliances) including Kettles, toasters, microwaves, vacuum cleaners
